January 18th CMUG and more!

Hello all!

I hope everyone had a nice holiday! Happy New Year to you all! This blog entry is dedicated to a number of items regarding our recent and upcoming meetings.

On September 14th, 2012, UMBC at The Universities at Shady Grove hosted a terrific CMUG meeting in Rockville, MD. Special thanks to Dr. Erwin Villager from UMBC for hosting! We had another great turn out and the facilities were excellent!

Thanks to Craig Robinson, from Latitude Geographics and Phil Reese from the Towson University Geospatial Research and Education lab for their presentations. Craig presented on “Overcoming Challenges Deploying Esri-based Mobile & WebGIS Applications” and Phil presented on “Balloon Mapping: Creating High Resolution Aerial Photographs at a Low Cost”.

Both presentations can be found here:

Tom Swanson from ESRI also presented on “ArcGIS 10.1: New improvements for building, sharing, and using maps and apps”. Thanks to Tom for making the trip from the ESRI, New York City office to present after just getting back from Europe on an 8-day, 200 mile run! Crazy!

Our next CMUG meeting is quickly approaching and will be held at the Community College of Baltimore County, Essex Campus! We will be meeting from 8:30am – 2:00pm on Friday, January 18th, 2013, in the B-Building Upper Lobby. Please note the extended time for this particular meeting. In addition to our presentations, after lunch we will be hosting a special geographic information system professional (GISP) workshop lead by Doug Adams of the Baltimore County Department of Public Works. Many of us are interested in the becoming GISPs, but are not familiar with the requirements and the process involved. Doug has generously donated some of his time to share his thoughts, perspective, and experience having gone through the GISP process.

Please RSVP to me if you are planning to attend the GISP workshop.

An agenda with information on directions, parking, and maps can be found here:

And please remember to register for this event through ESRI. The registration link can be found here:

Looking ahead, we are tentatively planning our spring CMUG meeting for Friday, May 17th. We are currently looking for a site to host the meeting, presentations, a food sponsor, and ideas for what you would like to see in the ESRI technical presentation. Please let me know if you’re interested in contributing to this or any other future meeting.

And one last item, this year’s Towson University GIS Conference (TUGIS) will be held on Tuesday, March 19th, 2013. This year’s conference will have a different look and feel to it as it transitions to being “Maryland’s Geospatial Conference”. The link below will direct you to the official site for the conference:

That’s all for now. But, please mark Friday, January 18th, 2013 at 8:30am on your calendars. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone from across our user group region!
