January Meeting Recap and Our Upcoming Meetings!
Hello all!
The chill of winter is fighting to hold on, but we are officially into spring and the warm weather is on its way! I can hardly wait! In the meantime, keep warm and toasty and enjoy our recap of our last CMUG meeting and mark your calendar for our upcoming meeting in May when it will definitely be nice and warm… but not too warm hopefully!
On January 18th, 2013, The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), Essex Campus hosted a CMUG meeting with a packed agenda! And even though one of our presenters was ill and could not make it (Glad you’re feeling better Alison!), we still had a number of quality presentations that really showed off what everyone is doing across the region. As the host for this meeting, I hope everyone was pleased with the facilities. Special thanks to ESRI for providing all of the food, coffee, and drinks for our breakfast!
One of the things I have wanted to do differently with CMUG is to spotlight projects that students across the region have worked on. This is particularly important to me as an educator as these are the folks that will be moving into the job market in our region and taking the skills that they learn with them. My intent is to encourage students from all institutions to present at these meetings. It’s a great way to get their names out there and to begin the crucial networking that makes for a successful career. During this past January meeting, we had our first set of student presentations at CMUG from the Geospatial Applications Program at CCBC. Special thanks to these students for putting themselves out there and showing off what they have been working on in GIS:

The first of our other two presentations came from our colleagues in Calvert County, Maryland, Kirsti Uunila and Eric Benson, along with Brad Songer from the ESRI Philadelphia office. Together they highlighted ESRI’s Storytelling with Maps website and Calvert County’s own story map with their presentation on the Calvert County Heritage Tours: The Mackall Road Route. This presentation was a wonderful collaboration and emphasized the application of GIS to archaeological/historical preservation. The presentation, the ESRI Storytelling with Maps site, and the Calvert County Heritage Tours: The Mackall Road Route site can be found here:

And last, but certainly not least, we had Doug Adams from the Baltimore County Department of Public Works present on the Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) application, points system, and process. This was a very informative presentation for all in attendance and I believe it helped to alleviate much of the confusion and anxiety of completing the GISP application. In addition, Doug was kind enough to put together an Excel spreadsheet that we can all use internally for tracking our points for our applications. Please note that this sheet should be used with Excel 2007 or higher. If you have any problems with the sheet, let me know and I can sort it out with Doug. Our next CMUG meeting is just over the horizon but will be here before we know it! We tentatively have an offer from Howard Community College to host our May 17th meeting. As I firm this up, I will let everyone know. An agenda with information on directions, parking, and maps along with the ESRI registration link will be available soon, so stay tuned!
Looking ahead, sort of way ahead, keep the September 2013 meeting in mind. We are looking for a site to host the meeting, presentations, a food sponsor, and ideas for what you would like to see in the ESRI technical presentation. Please let me know if you’re interested in contributing to this or any other future meeting.
